Nice work, you are so diligent!
at the beginning of the painting it is full of possibilities, so maybe you feel more free to invent? and once you commit to your path or know what it's going to look like, that wonder of invention slips away, so you're eager to move on to the next thing...that makes sense to me!

It is surely going somewhere! J'aime beaucoup tes portraits. Do you use models or they just come out of your head?
